Our winter package consists of the Jordö villa together with a Master 500 Pro and two high end fishing kayaks.
In late autumn the majority of the pikes migrate into the vast inner archipelagos shallow bays. The main reason is that the water temperature actually is higher there due do the thick clay seabeds that absorb warmth. That means that pikes are rather easy to find IF you are really careful and not spook them. Any sound, a shadow from a boat etc spook the pike, but with a kayak you can get really close. This kind of fishing is very exciting. It´s almost like stealth hunting. Go to my Youtube channel, pikestrikesweden, and you will be able to see many vids from my personal fishing. Almost 100% of my pike fishing is pike on the fly from kayak with no “help” from technical fishing gadgets such as echo sounders, GPS etc. I have only a fly wallet with a couple of good pike flies, extra wire and leaders together with two class eight/nine rods. Floating line on one rod and slow intermediate on the other. Then I go FISHING… November and December are the two best months both for size and numbers. The climate change has led to that we dont have any real winters in our archipelago anymore. The only good thing is the amazing winter fishing for pike that is a result of this.
How do we perform this kind of físhing?
You paddle standing up trying to spot the pike or the dust cloud from one that swims away. When you see the first pike you know that there are more pike close by The pike normally form small groups during the winter. It´s very important to fish your bait very, very slow and with many and rather long stops. The most efficient way to do that is by fly fishing. We normally fly fish with a 8-10 class fly rod and a floating or slow intermediate fly line. Again, go to my Youtube channel, pikestrikesweden, and you will see how this is done by a pro. I will help you. It´s not hard or dangerous as many think. This is fishing!
If you don´t do fly fishing with a normal fly rod, you might instead use a spinning rod, a bombarda/casting float, a long, tapered leader with a pike fly on the end. This way you can cast longer than with a fly rod and, with a bit of training, present the fly in the same way as with a fly rod.
It might be windy, so a boat for mother shipping of the two kayaks are vital is such conditions, also for safety reasons. By mother shipping 1) you and your group can explore all the big inner bays. Remember; This archipelago is about 40 kilometers from East to West, so you have some options if using the boat. If two of you are fishing from the boat and two from the kayaks, I bet that the kayak anglers will "win"… 1) Mother shipping: you tie one kayak along each side of the boat with the front of the kayaks slightly higer than the aft so that the streaming water when driving flows under them. Then you cruise in rather slow speed from the Jordö villa to the spots that you get from me, Gunnar Ahlström. There you release the kayaks. By doing like this, you don´t have to do long exausting paddling sessions and save your energy for very exciting sight fishing after pike.
What to ware?
I ware breathing waders with good quality underware, a wading jacket or similar. Under the jacket I ware wool based underware and sweater. The thin life vest is worn under the jacket so that I can use my pockets and other nice things that my fishing/wading jaget offers. In the kayak or in the boat there should be a wet sack with an extra set of clothes so that, if you are unlucky, you can put on dry clothes IF you get wet. That does almost never happen, but its important to be prepared for a worst case scenario.
You can always chat with me if you have questions. You find me on Facebook (the PikeStrike page or my personal page, Gunnar Ahlström). My e-mail address is pikestrike@hotmail.com. My personal mobile phone number: 0046 705 920868
